Inside Havana

Havana City was founded on November 16, 1519. It is the capital of the Cuba Republic and its largest city, its main economic center and the city with the largest population.  It is made up of 15 municipalities and although the greatest influx of tourist attractions is concentrated specifically in some, each municipality has its myths and charms. Discover its most emblematic places below.

Playa: located on the city’s coastline, it stands out for its great economic and social development. There are places of tourist interest such as hotels, theaters, restaurants and night bars; also commercial and business centers and the diplomatic headquarters of the countries in Cuba.

Plaza de la Revolucion: despite being one of the smallest municipalities in the province, it has symbolic places of the nation. It cradles the University of Havana, the iconic National, Habana Libre and Cohíba hotels, the Focsa building, one of the highest in the country, as well as the most important avenues that constitute access routes to different parts of the capital. The headquarters of government bodies, the Revolution Square and the National Theater are also located there. Its territorial extension covers a large part of the Malecon Habanero.

Centro Habana: it is the smallest municipality in the province and the one with the highest population density. It is located in the northern and central part, as its name indicates, it is downtown Havana, it is not old Havana, nor the modern one, it is the intermediate city, the transition city.

Habana Vieja:  it is the busiest municipality and known by foreign visitors in the capital. Its great heritage value, focused mainly on its Historic Center, encompasses important sites that constitute jewels of modern and colonial architecture: churches, squares, parks, hotels, restaurants, bars, the Capitol, the Great Theater of Havana, boulevards, hotels newly built luxury hotels and century-old hotels inherited from previous stages.

Habana del Este; it is the municipality with the largest territorial extension. Cradle of the best beaches on the Havana coastline. Endowed with warm waters and white sands, Tarara, Santa María del Mar or Guanabo are the best options for your enjoyment.

Regla: Located southeast of the Bay of Havana, it is a fishing municipality in which the infrastructure of the city’s port. Its main attraction is “ Regla Boat”, a different and unique means of transport in the country, which allows movement in a fast, pleasant and economical way from Regla and Casablanca (a town within the municipality) to Old Havana.

Guanabacoa: it is one of the oldest territories in the province and one of the most recognized defenders of Afro-Cuban traditions. It is the cradle of prominent Cuban musicians, making it an ideal place to learn about the cultural and religious legacy of the national heritage.

Cerro: it is a small municipality of the city. A famous phrase defines it “El Cerro has the key” and it is precisely because of the great value of important sites that are located in it, such as: the first historical aqueducts of the city, the perfume industry and sports centers such as the Coliseum of the Sport City and the Latin American Baseball Stadium.

Rancho Boyeros: The main airport in the country “José Martí International Airport” is located here. It also has the Agroindustrial Fairgrounds where exhibitions, sales and auctions of livestock animals are held, the National Zoological Park with 340 hectares of surface and more than 800 animals of more than 100 different species.

Arroyo Naranjo: It stands out for places of great interest for recreation in the company of nature such as Lenin Park and the National Botanical Garden, with an area of 600 hectares and the exhibition of some 4,000 plant species. It also has the largest exhibiting center in the country “Expocuba“, where important national and international events take place.

La Lisa: it is located on the western outskirts of the capital. It is characterized by being the headquarters of important scientific institutions in the country where the “Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine” stands out with an outstanding work in the study, prevention, control and eradication of communicable diseases and the Scientific Pole, to promote the development of Biotechnology.

Marianao: it is distinguished from other municipalities of the Capital by the abundant presence of vegetation throughout its area, which is why those who love the benefits of its nature also know it as “garden city”. The name meant “land between two rivers”, being surrounded to the east by the Almendares River and to the west by the Quibú River.

10 de Octubre: it is the most populated municipality in the city and takes its name from one of the primitive communication routes that crossed the territory in a north-south direction. It is a highly urbanized area and has some of the most interesting neighborhoods in the city.

Cotorro: it has one of the greatest relics of the country’s cultural and architectural heritage, the Church of Santa María del Rosario, considered the Cathedral of the Campos de Cuba and declared a National Monument by the Congress of the Republic in 1946.

San Miguel del Padrón: one of the identifying features of this municipality is the monumental work in honor of the Virgen del Camino, located at the entrance of the same in a park of the same name. The most interesting site to visit is the “Finca Vigía”, the House Museum of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. The property includes, in addition to the residence, a three-story tower, the bungalow, the swimming pool and the beautiful yacht Pilar.
